J to the L

Now that the drizzly cold days are setting in for January, it’s time to think about your casual/weekend wardrobe.  To do this,  you should be keeping your eye on  J. Lindeberg.  What started out as a simple upscale golf line turned into a lifestyle collection and believe us…it’s fabulous.  It is kept very basic for all you “no frills” kind of guys but still has an edge to keep it from boring.  Below are their takes on sweatshirts which we LOVE because if you’re out of college it may be time to let go of this University/Sport inspired article of clothing.  (Girlfriends, you can thank us later…we know you’ve been eyeing it.)  Please take time to check out the website to view their accessories and jackets…they’re WONDERFUL!

New Boot Goofin

One of my favorite quotes from Reno 911’s Lt. Jim Dangle, “I’m just goofin. New boot goofin.” I have no idea what it means, but its a funny clip.

New boots are no joke though. Its cold outside! The other day I spotted a guy on the metro  in boots like the ones pictured below with dark denim jeans, a black peacoat, and a knit cap. It was a love at first site. Well a love for the boots. I could get used to winter seeing these around.

Your Mom Shops at Lands’ End

Guest Blogger: Jason

I assume that for most guys out there, the name “Lands’ End” conjures up images of piles of stupid catalogues their mom got in the mail everyday when they were a kid.  It’s most likely synonymous with other mom-wear labels such as “Talbots,” “J. Jill,” and “Coldwater Creek.”  But I also assume that most guys out there haven’t opened those Lands’ End catalogues lately.  Because, if they had, they would likely have different and much better opinion of the brand.

Lands’ End started back in the 1960s as a sailboat racing outfitter and has since evolved into a supplier of affordable, classic American style rags.  Check out their website (landsend.com) and you’ll find excellent tailored fit oxfords for under $30, slimmer fitting (not skinny) khakis for under $40, and great sweaters under $50, not to mention an array of fantastic ties and scarves.

And, as if that’s not enough, Lands’ End just recently launched a new label, “Canvas” (canvas.landsend.com), that, once it releases its full collection in February, could potentially rival J. Crew for dominance in classically stylish and hip menswear market, only at $10-$30 less per item.

What’s Cooler Than Being Cool?-Ice Cold Alpha’s

I can’t say that I am a huge fan of the typical frat boy attire. But in some cases, exceptions can be made. Meet the gentlemen of Alpha Phi Alpha the Vanderbilt chapter…their cool is only measured by being ice cold… and by that I mean it’s their motto “ice cold”.

Prep Chic/Layered Collegiate Attire-A+

With classic pieces, you can’t go wrong.  This is attire representing fraternal order people, at a university…this is an institution, turning boys, yes, to men.

Let’s give a B+ for brother hood

Normally for a popped collar I would give a C, however in this case,  there is no judgment. Oddly it works because of the personal style. Think of personal style as extra credit, confidence never hurt anyone, write that down.

All Tied Up

Whether it be all the years I gifted my dad with one for Christmas or all the terrible ones you see at office parties, something about this time of year makes me think of ties.  I have looked around and realized what I DON’T like about ties and what I do and I would like to illustrate my point using photos.

No, no, no.

Okay, so let’s talk about this.  I know you want to say, “C’mon, give us some credit. We know not to dress like Dwight.” I know this, yet somehow it’s still done so here goes.  Please consider two things when looking at patterns and colors for ties.  Number one, does this make me kind of dizzy just looking at it? Does it have  to do with the fact that the pattern looks like something from my ninth grade geometry book? Number two, does the color resemble the shade of my face before I hurl from this dizziness?

No.

I know this is also an obvious, however, it needs to be addressed.  By the way, this also covers seasonally themed versions.  Here’s the deal…expressing yourself with your garments and accessories is TOTALLY acceptable, however, a specific thing about you (you like to golf, you beat every one of your friends in Dragon Ball Z, you enjoy crossword puzzles etc.) should not be expressed in your clothing or accessories.  Subtlety is KEY.  To keep it fair, think about it this way…no man I know enjoys seeing a girl in a tshirt that says DIVA or PRINCESS in glitter pink letters or a sweater with Robert Pattinson’s face embroidered on it. Same thing.

Yes!

This is a way to be “creative” or “festive” without being crazy or downright offensive (and yes, some ties are so bad they are offensive).  Skinnier ties are a little more trendy as they seem to come and go, however, with Mad Men being a huge hit right now the skinny ties are back and better than ever!  Obviously wider ties are always a classic as long as you don’t go too wide (aka Ron Burgundy).

Blazer-stripe tie

This tie is just a classic.  It’s not too skinny, not too wide and it has your predictable diagonal stripe.  We like it because it’s understated but yet can go with so many other things seeing that it’s charcoal and blue.  I’m immediately thinking of all the checked shirts and v neck sweaters (or cardigans) that this would go with!

Double Yes!

Here’s something that’s a little bit more on the quirky side.  It is squared off at the bottom, it’s a “brighter” color and it’s a little skinnier.  It has it’s own little personality but doesn’t offer up that this man owns all The Simpsons seasons on DVD (he’s so mysterious that way!)  By the way, this is from American Apparel and you can get it in (you guessed it!!) LOTS of colors.

We would love to hear your take on ties, post pics of awful ties and/or great ones, give us your outfit ideas for ties, rant about bow ties, etc.
